From the meeting point we go down to the magical forest, Carvajal de Gredos is waiting for us. Meanwhile, we are contemplating the location of Cabezabellosa.

The landscape speaks for itself, the population owes its sacred hill that, like a great divinity, perches on the mountain slope, softens the terrain and gives the town fertile land. If it weren’t for the stone head here everything would be rough like the mountain that rises to our right, the scene gains a lot of strength with the Ambroz valley in the background.

In principle oaks transformed the rock into soil, then men continued the process, creating green meadows. However, Carvajal de Gredos has been cared for as a forest for millennia.

Following in the footsteps of the ancient vetones

Among the trees we will discover veton basins that belong to a prehistoric time. Celts worshipped the oak tree, from it they obtained heat and food. In these basins they processed the acorns for human consumption.

Within this landscape it is easy to imagine the Vettones in the tasks of gathering even though more than 2,000 years have passed. Despite being tribal societies, they were complex and highly organized. They were specialized in artisan trades, muleteer-merchants, blacksmiths and goldsmiths, warrior horsemen, bard-artists, priestly castes, and so on.

They also carved some rock altars on granite, and spread their most distinctive feature, stone bulls and boars, throughout the Gredos region as protective and religious symbols in their hunting and grazing areas.

They were animists, believing that all forms of nature have soul. Instead of building temples they chose very particular places on the landscape, usually where different cosmos elements overlaps, as Postoloboso, which is the confluence of two rivers.

The Druids transmitted their knowledge only through direct experience, so with archaeology and historical references we can only understand a small part of the profound thought of these Iron Age inhabitants. Nevertheless, their culture is more present than we suspect.

Shinrin yoku in Carvajal de Gredos

Any time of year is a good time to venture into the forest. With the leaves gone, the structure of the trees is more clearly visible; mosses and lichens grow everywhere in the warm winter sun. With the arrival of spring, life awakens and is an explosion of songs and colors. During the summer time, bee-eaters sing and fly above the bright canopy. Autumn is a palette of vibrant colors. May and September are perhaps the most special months.

Aquí y allá hay construcciones vernáculas que regresan sin prisas y sin oponer resistencia a la tierra. Mientras avanzamos, grandes moles graníticas salen a nuestro encuentro, antes estaban escondidas en la foresta. Caminamos entre magníficos árboles entre ellos destaca el Roble de Romanejo, catalogado como Arbol Singular, es uno de los más grandes de la península Ibérica, si bien singular es todo este bosque.

En seguida se hacen patentes los beneficios del shinrin-yoku, el lugar es bálsamo para los sentidos, con la quietud de fondo, podemos oír el ulular del viento o el trino de los pájaros. Con la respiración percibimos fitoncidas y fragancias de plantas aromáticas. Este bosque se deja tocar, prueba a sentir el suave y mullido musgo bajo la palma de las manos o desliza las yemas por las protuberancias de cortezas. Puedes saborear el agua directamente del manantial o cerrar los ojos y concéntrarte en el tacto de la suave brisa…

Estas experiencias de inmersión en la naturaleza nos ayudan a comprender la filosofía animista de los antiguos pueblos celtas.

Carvajal de Gredos lo tiene todo para dejarse llevar en un mar de agradables sensaciones.

Sensacielos en plena naturaleza

Salimos a campo abierto, marchamos a través de matorral montano de piornos y cantueso, enfrente de nosotros vemos Piornal, el pueblo más alto de Extremadura.

Recorremos fabulosos miradores naturales, nuestra vista sobrevuela los paisajes siguiendo el curso de las grandes aves. Respiramos el aire serrano mientras sentimos la brisa montana que nos acaricia el rostro. Estamos entre Ambroz y Jerte.

Caminar es la manera más sana y pura de conectar con la naturaleza ¡Recorremos maravillosas sendas en Carvajal de Gredos con Naturgredos!

Consejos para caminar por el bosque

Este trayecto está pensado para todos, niños y mayores. Con mínimas pendientes llegamos a espectaculares paisajes de alta montaña.

Vamos campo a través y por caminos, lo más cómodo es llevar zapatillas trekking o botas, aunque no es imprescindible ¡Eso sí, traete calzado impermeable si es época de lluvias!

En verano conviene portar un poco de agua y usar protectores solares, mejor gafas y sombrero.

Ten en cuenta que siempre que vayas al campo tienes que vestir pantalón largo y calzado cerrado.

Por último, no hace falta traer predisposición para déjarse llevar por la magia y transportar por las vistas ¡Feliz bosque!
